King's & Club 1541 battle for Cricket & Netball Freeman Cups

It was fantastic to see so many Club 1541 members back on Sunday 7th July to both watch and take part in two excellent fixtures.

First off, the boys somehow managed to avoid the rain and play a full 20 over match, with a very strong Club 1541 side returning. The King's side started well with the ball in the first innings, taking early wickets but the strength in depth of the Club 1541 batting line-up shone through as they pisted 206 in their 20 overs, including 50s from Matt Luxton and captain Josh Barnes.

The young King's side started slowly in their reply but grew into the chase, with some excellent strokes putting the pressure back onto their predecessors. Despite picking up the pace, some good bowling from Club 1541 helped them to win by 50 runs. The game was played in excellent spirit and enjoyed by all, we look forward to seeing some of the current Upper Sixth back next year to try and help Club 1541 hold on to the Freeman Cricket Cup.

Meanwhile, in the Sports Hall, the Club 1541 Girls' Netball Team was battling the strong King's 1st Team. Brilliantly supported on the court by the departing Miss Pike and her daughter, the 'visitors' put in a stirring performance, highlighted by Amaya Herold who, a real force to be reckoned with, dominated the centre, playing with patience and flare.

The game came down to the wire with King's narrowly pipping an enthralling game by just 2 goals in front of a packed crowd, including former players of Miss Pike's time here at King's, who had come to say goodbye and thank you for all of her hard work over 16 years here. Miss Pike's leaving speech was emotional, and it rounded off an excellent day of sport, with King's keeping hold of the Freeman Netball Cup for another year.

All four teams and spectators came together in the Pavilion for food and a chance to catch up with school friends from years gone by. Thank you to all who came and helped to make it such a fun day. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
