The board is made up of members from all across Club 1541, former students, staff and parents, who work with the Head and the Development team to support King's in many areas. From event planning to helping to grow the network of contacts around the world. Here is the group of members, currently on the board:
" After leaving King's in 1969 I went to the Bristol College of Commerce to do an HND in Business Studies, after which I went into IT and joined NCR as a management trainee. After three years I took a variety of sales roles selling mainframe computers around the UK and subsequent to that I worked in sales management roles, eventually heading up Hewlett-Packard's finance sales division across Asia and much of Europe. I retired in 2002 and now write Young Adult fantasy adventure books and run the Authors Reach Ltd publishing company.
I am also an exam invigilator at a 6th form college and play golf whenever I can."
Nik Hill –Left Kings 1975 with the aim of becoming a PE Teacher after being inspired by the legend that is Keth Page – that didn’t happen and ended up in Recruitment for 32 years; retired in 2023 and now busier than ever with various interests including music, photography, Walking rugby and my main passion, running Comedy nights at 12 County venues including the Gloucester Brewery, Gloucester Guildhall and our very own Ivor Gurney Hall! Rubbed shoulders and gigged with the likes of Sarah Millican, Alan Carr, Jon Richardson to name but three…it’s been an eventful journey, not bad for someone who’s school report aged 5 told me I was “socially immature”!
I was born in 1948 near Sandown Park race course in Esher, Surrey but at the tender age of two, my parents decided to move us to the Gloucestershire countryside, my first introduction being the Slad, made famous by the author Laurie Lee. In 1956, having received my first steps in education in Stroud, I joined the King’s school and subsequently won a music competition to be enlisted in the cathedral choir. As a newly demobbed ex-chorister I attended the first GCOCA dinner held at the Fleece hotel in 1960 and have maintained my membership to the present day.
My career, inspired by a gap year at a preparatory school in Stroud, really started in London following my first degree and teacher qualifications. However within a decade, partly inspired by my Serlo Housemaster of the time Pat David who had worked in the Gulf and a Kuwaiti classmate Nadir Sultan, I drove to Kuwait complete with double bass. This proved very useful for joining a jazz band but somewhat puzzled the Kuwaiti customs officials as I arrived at the border! Over more than fifty years of teaching I delivered mainly Economics and Business Studies lessons but also developed extra-curricular music programmes in Kuwait, Jordan and Portugal. My first school headship was in Jordan in 1991. This proved quite a baptism of fire owing to the need for a very rapid expansion of the premises resulting from the displacement of families both during and following the first Gulf War.
For the last 15 years before retirement in 2021, I was Principal of an international school in the Algarve where I still spend part of the year, the rest of the time being in Gloucester where I undertake external invigilation duties on a twice-yearly basis. Since my return I have been very impressed by the range of opportunities that King´s provides for all of its learners and have also enjoyed recalling events/changes from my school days with my new colleagues.
I attended King's from Upper Prep through to Upper Sixth Form, graduating in 2021. My passion for music and religious studies grew during my time at King's, which inspired me to pursue a degree in Theology and Religion at Durham University. There I had the privilege of becoming a Choral Scholar at Durham Cathedral, an experience that felt much like attending a King's assembly in the Cathedral every day. I am currently studying for my Law Conversion Masters in Moorgate, London, with the goal of becoming a solicitor in the City. I am looking forward to continuing my role as an Ambassador at King's.
Having spent all of her senior school years at King’s, in 1992, Emily became the first girl to be appointed Head of School. She went on to read Law at Cambridge University and qualified as a solicitor in the City of London.
Now Head of Knowledge Management at Travers Smith LLP, Emily’s long experience both as a dispute resolution solicitor and as a knowledge lawyer allowed her to develop a clear understanding of the needs of the business in relation to the way knowledge and information is retained and presented. With strategic oversight of the firm’s intranet and a lead role in information governance, Emily focuses on the internal storage, retrieval and dissemination of knowledge and information to maximise efficiency and consistency, and to support knowledge sharing.
Having retired from teaching in 2023 after 12 very happy years at the Kings School, I am delighted to be able to continue my association through Club 1541.
My entire teaching career has been spent in Gloucestershire, where I was born and went to school myself. I taught for 20 years at Chosen Hill and enjoyed leading a very busy and successful P.E. department.
My main passion has been playing and coaching netball at both school and club level. I was delighted to be involved in setting up the U17 Severn Stars franchise, which is now thriving at Kings under the Birmingham Panthers banner.
I am married, with 2 daughters and 4 wonderful grandchildren, one of whom is currently in Kings sixth form. Sport continues to play a huge part in all our lives and we are most often to be found pitch / court side spectating. We also enjoy travelling in our fun little campervan on the rare free weekend!
Dominique emigrated from the UK to Ontario, Canada, in 2007, where she now lives with her husband and two children. She is the Senior Executive Assistant to the CEO at Euna Solutions, a leading provider of SaaS solutions for the public sector. In addition to supporting executive leadership, she oversees all North American facilities, ensuring seamless operations across multiple locations in the U.S and Canada. In her spare time, Dominique actively pursues university courses to refine her skills, going on bike rides, and travelling. She also serves as the Treasurer on the Advisory Committee at her children’s school, and has been participating in alumni activities with Club 1541 since 2024.
Since leaving King's, I have gained a degree in History from Royal Holloway, University of London, and a Masters from the University of Cambridge. I completed my teacher teaching at the University of Oxford and since have worked in independent schools, both boarding and day, across Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Outside work, I enjoy exploring the world both close to home and further afield and keeping fit. I have stayed in touch with a number of my peers from Kings. As a teacher and former pupil, I can see the value of strong alumni networks for a school and individuals and I am looking forward to supporting the further development of Club 1641.
