Club 1541 and King's 1st XI Play Out a Thriller!

The 1st XI match against Club 1541 was the pinnacle of the team's season. The Old Boys team was a strong squad with a mixture of players from previous years. The game was played under lights and in appalling weather conditions. However, this did not dampen the quality of hockey whatsoever. The Old Boys didn’t take long to stamp their authority on the game and by the end of the first quarter they were leading 2-0. Just after half time Club 1541 increased their lead to 3-0. This ironically gave the school the motivation to press much harder and they were rewarded for this by a goal in the third quarter.

A real boost was given to the 'home' team and the crowd began to get behind the school side, soon they had added two more goals to take the game level at 3-3. The 1st XI really started to dominate and in the last 10 mins scored again to go 4-3 up. However, the Club 1541 bounced back to equalise five minutes from time. Neither side created much in the last few minutes and the final score remained 4-4. What a game!

Everyone was ‘worn out’, even the crowd, in what had been such a thrilling match. However, to find out who was going to win the Freeman Cup the game went to penalty shuffles, five from each team. The Upper 6th players for King's kept their cool and won 4 - 1 on shuffles – 8 – 5 overall. What a way to end a great night of Hockey. Thank you to all of the Former Students who came back, it was gret to see you!
