Archdeacon Meadow was alive with excitement on Sunday as the Club 1541 Hockey and Rugby teams returned to compete against King’s for the Freeman Cups.
First up was hockey, where a strong Club 1541 squad played well in a very competitive contest. Despite having no substitutes, King’s 1st XI fought hard, but the 'visitors' pulled ahead late to win 3–2 in a thrilling match.
Rain arrived just before the rugby kicked off, but it didn’t dampen spirits. The first ‘Old Boys’ vs King’s 1st XV match in a decade featured modern T1/touch rules and showcased excellent play from both sides. The King’s team, boosted by staff members Andy Philips, Wade Risdale, Ali Bressington, and Aidan Barr, couldn’t prevent a 10-7 try victory for Club 1541.
The Headmaster, David Morton, presented the Freeman Cups to the winning captains, and it was lovely that many stayed afterward to enjoy food and a drink.
Watch this space for next year’s expanded touch-rugby tournament!
